… Greece has a lot to celebrate today on a historic and religious level .
Today marks the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence , which is such a big deal, that even British royalty is honouring it with a visit .
But today’s menu choice has to do with the religious significance of the day . It’s the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary and one of the days during Lent where people that observe it strictly ,are allowed fish, oil and wine , in order to gain strength to continue with their fasting until Easter.
So I went with tradition and served deep fried cod in a beer and flour batter, skordalia (mashed potatoes with crushed garlic, olive oil and white wine vinegar ) , beetroot in oil , vinegar , parsley and walnuts and wilted greens .
